Summer and the right beer. When the weather turns warm, there is nothing quite like an ice-cold beer. But which style is the right choice for the season?

As a general guideline, the lighter the color, the better in summer. A smooth pilsner or refreshing honey blonde are always wonderful options to combat the summer swelter.

Perhaps a finely crafted wheat beer accented by the flavor of a freshly squeezed orange or lemon is more to your liking. For the more adventurous palate, try a shandy, (a mixed drink of beer and lemonade) or michelada, which combines beer with quality mixers.

But don’t worry if you’re not a DIY type of person; shandies and micheladas can both be found pre-packaged. Whatever the choice may be, a beer in summer is best when enjoyed ice cold, but better when enjoyed responsibly.

The right food and beer pairings are also a great way to enjoy the summertime.

Pale ale has a sweet, full-bodied and fruity taste. It goes well with meaty options such as cheeseburgers and spicy buffalo wings. Try pairing it with a burger with mozzarella and a spinach-arugula pesto.

Pair porter with a smoked duck breast.

Fruit beer is ideal alongside dishes with sweet components. Try mascarpone cheese, or a duck dish. Pair porter with smoky, BBQ-type foods. Enjoy a smoked duck and walnuts with greens for a mouth-watering summertime sit-down dinner. Cheers to beer!
