California makes a significant contribution to the state and nation by providing quality jobs and bolstering the economy through hospitality, taxes and tourism. Its 4,800 bonded wineries are predominantly family-owned businesses that produce 81 percent of U.S. wine, making California the number one wine state in America. California wine is an economic powerhouse that accounts for $35.2 billion in retail sales in the U.S. and $1.53 billion in wine exports.
As a world leader in sustainable winegrowing, the California wine community is an environmental steward of the land. Wineries making 80 percent of California wine participate in the California Sustainable Winegrowing Program. The 599,000 acres of vineyards planted to winegrapes account for one percent of the terrain of California, while preserving open space and creating scenic pastoral beauty.
