Shaken or Stirred:
Happy National Martini Day!
June 19th represents a national holiday that perhaps some are unfamiliar with, but features a drink that everyone knows well: National Martini Day.
The martini became popular in the mid 1800’s, and has been a staple in bars and hotels around the country ever since. James Bond famously orders a vodka martini in his film, which is now called the Vesper or Bond Martini, and the characters of HBO’s Mad Men are known to stir things up with martinis of their own.
The classic martini is made with gin and vermouth, and is usually garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. A dirty martini includes an olive, and a martini on the rocks is a martini over ice.
Famous fans of the popular cocktail include Julia Child (who enjoyed the reverse martini, and said she could easily down two of them), Madonna is a fan of the sweet and tart pomegranate martini, and Oprah loves to order a Lemon Drop.
In honor of National Martini Day, shake up the classic with the modern-day summer cocktail: A Jalapeño Grapefruit Martini.
3 ounces grapefruit juice
1 ounce sparkling water
1 lime wedge
1 ounce lime juice
Directions: Use a lime wedge to rub the rim of the martini glass, and dip into kosher salt and chili powder mixture. Combine vodka and jalapeño slices in a shaker, and shake until mixed. Strain and pour into a martini glass, top with sparkling water and grapefruit juice, and garnish with a colorful straw. Enjoy responsibly.
